Looking for a free triangle shawl crochet pattern? This lacy shawl in delicate pastel colors is a rewarding crochet project to embrace this summer.
Furthermore, this crochet stitch is so easy that you won’t need instructions or a diagram after just a few rows. Even a beginner knows the crochet granny stitch, right? For this easy crochet shawl, we are using a stitch that we call ‘light granny stitch.’

Crochet Stitch for This Shawl
Why is this stitch called granny stitch light? As illustrated, we are alternating two rows. One row is just standard granny stitch, as used in another popular crochet shawl pattern (free & easy). The second row consists of special V-stitches.

Triangle Shawl Construction
The shawl is crocheted in a bottom-up triangular shape. Firstly, you start at the bottom. Next, you’ll increase on both sides, allowing your triangle shawl to grow until it reaches the desired size.
Shawl’s Finished Size
A triangle measuring 48″ x 48″ x 66″. The altitude (height) of the triangle measures 35″.

Firstly, the stitch is very easy, which is important if you are looking for a relaxing crochet project. Second, you are repeating 2 rows made with basic crochet stitches. So, even if you are a beginner, have no fear and try this free pattern to make a lovely triangle shawl.
Basic Stitches Used for the Shawl
- ch – chain
- DC – double crochet
- EDC – extended double crochet

Materials and Tools
For the original shawl, we used Patons Squine Lace yarn that has been discontinued. But you can use any yarn that is marked FINE CYC #2 and LIGHT CYC #3, according to the standard yarn weight system by Craft Yarn Council.
This system is very helpful because often you can’t find the yarn used for a project and have to substitute. As a result, you can be assured that the yardage and yarn quantities will be approximately the same.
- Any fine-weight yarn CYC #2: 2-3 100g skeins or 5 x 50g skeins (approximately 236 g total to achieve the same finished size 48″ x 48″ x 66″)
- Crochet hook 3mm or 4 mm (set with everything you need)
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Yarn Suggestions
100g Sequin Yarn for Crocheting & Knitting – Soft and Lightweight (100% acrylic with sequins)
Another option is a natural fiber yarn – Premier® Cotton Fair® Yarn. This lightweight cotton-blend yarn is perfect for summer projects. Contents: 52% cotton, 48% acrylic; Skein Weight: 3.5 oz. (100 g) Yardage: 317 yd. (290 m). Also, it comes in many colors, so it’s easy to pick your favorite color scheme.
- Premier® Cotton Fair® Yarn in White 100g
- Premier® Cotton Fair® Yarn in Chambray 100g
- Premier® Cotton Fair® Yarn in Baby Pink 100g

Check out how the stitch looks with Premier Cotton Fair yarn. It feels slightly heavier and has a nice bounce, but drapes nicely. Also, the yarn is slightly thicker, though the label says CYC #2 fine. As a result, it could be more suitable for beginners than the fine yarn with sequins.
Overall, it is a nice option for summer if you want your shawl made with natural fibers rather than acrylic yarn with sequins.
