Crochet a Beautiful Farmhouse Blanket
The idea for this easy crochet blanket pattern came from farmhouse color scheme decor inspiration. What if you could make a pretty lap blanket to keep you and your loved ones warm on a cozy farmhouse porch?
Gingham or plaid design may seem complicated for a crochet pattern, but with our easy tutorial, you would master this technique very quickly.
First, you should practice carrying yarn through your project while working with two strands of different color yarn. Consequently, this blanket will be one of the quickest and easiest patterns in your toolbox.
Color Scheme for Your Blanket
Generally speaking, the farmhouse color palette is pretty simple. Using basic white, light grey, and charcoal colors you can crochet a timeless accessory for any neutral decor.
To summarize, in this easy pattern you would be working with alternating squares of three colors. Usually, this pattern is called buffalo plaid. To be more precise, we should call in a gingham pattern. In essence, buffalo plaid is a combination of red, grey, and black squares.

Easy Crochet Stitch
Most importantly, use an easy stitch if you are a beginner. This pattern uses only two basic crochet stitches.
Furthermore, you’ll love this easy stitch because:
- it is reversible;
- you will repeat the same row;
- the two stitches are repeated to the end of the row;
- it is very easy to learn and implement for your blanket.
Are you familiar with double crochet (DC) stitch? This pattern uses a slightly modified version of it called extended double crochet (EDC).
What is Extended Double Crochet Stitch?
The first thing to remember, start an extended double crochet stitch the same way you’ll do simple double crochet. It is a little taller than normal double crochet which will give your creation some interesting texture.
How to Crochet Extended Double Crochet Stitch:
- yarn over, put your hook through the underlying stitch (or chain if it is the first row);
- pull the yarn through it so you have 3 loops on the hook;
- next, yarn over and pull through only ONE LOOP on the hook forming a chain (that’s what differentiates this EDC stitch);
- for the next step, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook;
- lastly, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
You have created Extended Double Crochet Stitch!
For this project, you will be alternating extended double crochet and single crochet stitches. As it is the same row repeat, your EDC stitches will be on top of the previous row SC stitches and SC stitches will be on top of underlying EDC stitches.
Create a practice swatch to work on mastering this easy blanket stitch and to check your tension. Chain multiples of 12 +1. SC into 2nd ch from the hook. EDC into the next chain.
Continue to the end of the row with EDC into the last chain. Ch 1. Turn.
For row 2: SC (on top of EDC); EDC (on top of SC). Continue to the end of the row. Ch 1. Turn.
Repeat row 2 until you feel completely comfortable with this stitch. Now you can start your easy pattern.

Materials
- 5 skeins of Impeccable Yarn by Loops and Threads in Pale Gray
- 3 skeins of Impeccable Yarn by Loops and Threads in White
- 3 skeins of Impeccable Yarn by Loops and Threads in Charcoal
- crochet hook US K/10.5 – 6.5 mm
Each skein of this yarn has 285 yards/4.5 oz (260 m/127.5 g). It is machine-washable, 100% acrylic yarn that is non-piling and durable. It is medium (4) yarn that normally requires US H/8 – 5mm hook but we are using a bigger hook to give this easy blanket more breathing room and more texture.
Pale Gray is our medium color that will be carried through the whole project. If you haven’t practiced that before, I definitely recommend mastering it first on your testing swatch before starting this pattern.
In fact, the more you practice before, the faster you’ll be able to finish your project.
Keep in mind that our farmhouse blanket is 13 squares by 13 squares. Each square is 12 stitches wide and 10 rows tall. By all means, you can modify the size of your blanket but it should have an odd number of squares: 15, 11, 9, etc.
Finished Size: 56″ x 56″
Tip
You can modify this pattern by making it 9 squares by 9 squares. In that case, chain 108 (9×12 plus 1). Consequently, your baby blanket will be 36 inches x 36 inches.
Directions for Farmhouse Crochet Blanket
Ch 156 (13×12) + 1 with Pale Gray.
Row 1
*SC into 2nd ch from the hook. EDC into the next chain.* Continue * * until you have 11 stitches and for the 12th stitch pull through the last 2 loops with a new color – White.
Place the gray yarn on top of your crochet work and continue to crochet over it alternating gray and white stitches (12 stitches each) to the end of the row, last stitch – EDC into the last ch with gray.
For the last 12 stitches with gray you don’t need to carry your white yarn, just leave the tail in the front until you come back to it in your 2nd row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2
*SC into 2nd ch from the hook. EDC into the next chain.* For the 12th stitch, pull through the last 2 loops with white.
Place the gray yarn on top of your crochet work and continue to crochet over it alternating white and gray stitches (12 each) to the end of the row, last stitch – EDC into the last ch with gray.
Rows 3-10.
Repeat row 2 until you have 10 rows of gray and white squares. At the end of row 10, to change color, pull through the last 2 loops with Charcoal. Ch 1, turn. Cut the white yarn off leaving a 10-12″ tail.
Rows 11-21
Continue in the same manner with Charcoal and Gray. You’ll be crocheting with charcoal on top of gray squares and with gray on top of white squares.
It is important to realize, you will have a lot of tail ends. Needless to say, it makes your life easier to weave them in as you finish each color.
Continue alternating colors until you have finished your blanket, It should be 13 x 13 squares. Weave in the last tail ends, block your work.
