Is velvet yarn easy to work with?

Though soft and luxurious, velvet yarn is not the easiest to work with. As a matter of fact, it takes time to learn special techniques so you can crochet with velvet yarn.

First of all velvet yarn is slippery. For this reason, you must maintain a tighter tension than you normally do in order not to have loose strands.

Second, keep in mind velvet yarn’s structure. As an illustration, it reminds a bottle brush.

Equally important is to use a smaller hook than recommended. As a result, you’ll have a neater-looking fabric without any loose strands.

Third, start with a practice swatch. Above all, you’ll have experience crocheting with velvet yarn and figure out the necessary tension for your blanket.

Finally, not every crochet stitch works well with velvet yarn. In fact, it is a drawback of this particular yarn and you have to make peace with it or live with the imperfection of your velvet yarn crochet projects.

As you pick your crochet velvet yarn patterns, keep this in mind.

With this in mind, always create a practice swatch to see how is your tension and if the blanket stitch of your choice works well with velvet yarn. If you see loose strands, go down one crochet hook size and keep your tension tight.

Easy Stitch for Crochet Velvet Baby Blanket

As mentioned above, not every stitch works well with velvet yarn. As an illustration, this easy blanket stitch works perfectly well with tricky velvet yarn.

With this in mind, practice your tension tightness as you work on these easy clusters. Each cluster consists of one single crochet (sc) and one half double crochet (hdc) made into the same stitch.

Consequently, you’ll have to chain any even number of stitches (multiples of 2) plus 1 to create any size blanket. For this Bernat Velvet crochet blanket pattern, we chained 156 (+1).

Finished Size for Crochet Velvet Baby Blanket:

Your finished blanket will measure approximately 36″ x 36″. The actual size depends on your crochet tension and crochet hook size.

Also, to achieve the desired size you can adjust the number of rows you crochet with each color. As you would have some leftover yarn, it is possible to go up or down in the number of total rows.

To put the finishing touches, weave in all the ends. Be extra careful, as velvet yarn is slippery it is hard to hide the very ends.

Now you can admire your work and enjoy the soft luxurious baby blanket. Nothing says ‘love’ as a handmade gift for your loved ones.
