- machine-washable;
- has OEKO-TEX certification: tested against a list of more than 1,000 harmful regulated and unregulated chemicals that may be harmful to human health.
Let’s get to the pattern!
Materials
Note, that though an 8 mm (U.S L/11) hook is recommended for this particular yarn, we used a 12 mm crochet hook which allows the fabric ‘to breathe’ giving it more texture.
In either case, create a small swatch first to try 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm crochet hooks to see the difference. As a result, pick the one that works for you.
Blanket Stitch
For this easy chunky blanket, we use a half double crochet stitch made in back loops only (HDC BLO). In case you are not familiar with this stitch, watch short this tutorial to master it.
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- HDC – half double crochet
- BL – back loops
- st – stitch
Pattern
CH 109, HDC into 3rd ch from the hook. Continue with HDC until the end of the chain (107 st).
Note, that this particular pattern is not a multiple of any number of stitches. As a result, you can chain any number of stitches.
So, if you make a mistake and chain 105 it doesn’t matter. The starting foundation chain can have any number of chains. Just make sure to start with HDC into the 3rd chain from the hook.
Row 1
Ch 2, turn. HDC BL (half double crochet into back loops) to the end of the row.
Row 2 – 60
Repeat row 1.
Fasten off, cut the yarn leaving a 5-7 inch tail. Next, we’ll attach 4 pom poms at each of the four corners of the blanket.
Adding Pom Poms
It is fun to add pom poms to the blanket using leftover yarn. There are different ways to make pom poms. You can use a pom pom maker or a piece of cardboard (or even a small square coaster).
Check out a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a pom pom. Similarly, it is another pattern for a simple and easy chunky blanket to crochet with 3 colors of Bernat Blanket yarn. Perfect for coastal home decor!
