Suggested Chunky Yarn for This Stitch

When it comes to choosing the right chunky yarn for your crochet projects, there are many choices at craft stores and online. The weight, texture, color, and yardage of the yarn will play a significant role in the outcome of your project.

For this project, we are using a Demi Purl™ Yarn by Loops & Threads® available at Michaels (in color Blanc De Blanc). It is a Super Bulky (6) yarn, 8.8 oz/250 g, 152yd/139 m. Most importantly, it comes in 30 colors! So you can pick anything from earthy Tawny Olive to dreamy Cashmere Rose.

Interestingly, it is the softest chunky yarn you’ll ever touch. Though the weight and yardage of the skein is less than other popular brands, it is very luxurious to the touch.

Crochet Hook for This Stitch

Though the recommended crochet hook for this stitch is 6.5 mm/US K-10.5, we used a 10 mm/N-15 metal crochet hook by Boye. For this stitch, it is important to have ‘breathing room’ so it looks chunky and has plenty of texture. Also, metal is perfect for chunky yarn as it allows it to slide easily.

Selecting the perfect crochet hook for your chunky yarn projects is just as crucial as choosing the right yarn. The size and material of the hook can impact the overall look and feel of your creation, so it’s important to consider these factors when starting a new project.

So, try a few hooks between 6mm and 10mm and check your results. Next, check which one gives you the best texture and feels comfortable. Lastly, pick the hook that feels right.

Chunky Yarn Crochet Stitch

As illustrated, the stitch consists of 2-stitch clusters. So, for your practice swatch, chain any EVEN NUMBER +1. For example, chain 20+1.

Notably, to start a chunky blanket throw, you can chain 76+1. As a result, you’ll get a 40″x10″ rectangle from the whole skein (with a little leftover tail). So, for a 40″x60″ chunky blanket, you’d need 6 skeins.

Row 1

Next, HDC into the 2nd CH from the hook, SL into the next CH. Keep repeating to the end of the row (last ST will be SL ST). CH1, turn.

Row 2 (and all rows)

HDC into BL of the first ST. Next, SL ST into BL of the next ST. Repeat to the end of the row. CH1, turn.

As illustrated, you will make HDC stitches into SL stitches, and SL ST into HDC stitches of the previous row. Additionally, you will always use back loops only. As a result, you’ll have these beautiful textured ridges forming the luxurious fabric of your chunky crochet project.

As illustrated, this simple crochet stitch allows you to create a beautiful texture with ease. By repeating just 2 crochet stitches and the same row, you can crochet chunky throws and blankets by combining your favorite colors.
