What is Hygge?
Firstly, let’s define hygge. ‘Hygge’ is a popular Danish term that describes a certain philosophy and doesn’t have an exact corresponding word in English. It represents rather a lifestyle which focuses on comfort, coziness, simplicity, and pleasure found in ordinary things.
Hygge Design Principles
A fundamental aspect of hygge design lies in its adherence to minimalist principles, which emphasize clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. Incorporating minimalist furniture into your home decor is essential to achieving the sleek and uncluttered look that is synonymous with Scandinavian design.

What is Hygge Aesthetic?
The cozy and inviting hygge aesthetic draws inspiration from the Nordic landscape of fjords, forests, and mountains. This means incorporating earthy tones into your color palette, like soothing grays, warm birch, and natural greens. For a touch of luxury, consider adding pops of gold and copper. By embracing this nature-inspired color scheme, you can create a truly hygge experience in your designs.
Creating Hygge Aesthetics with Soft Textiles
To truly capture the essence of Nordic design and bring hygge into your home, consider the importance of textiles. Soft, plush blankets, warm wool rugs, and textured throw pillows can all contribute to creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Choose natural materials like cotton, wool, linen, and chunky yarn to add warmth and tactile appeal to your space. Also, layering different textiles in varying tones and textures can add depth and interest to your decor, creating a welcoming and snug environment that is perfect for lounging or entertaining.

Supplies
- Crochet Hook, US Size N, 10 mm, Gold, by Boye
- Mainstays Cozy Chenille Yarn in Smoke Green – 3 skeins
- Mainstays Cozy Chenille Yarn in Ivory – 2 skeins
- scissors
- tapestry needle
This yarn by Mainstays (a Women-Owned Business) is available at Walmart. So, if you want to touch it and explore other colors, put it on your shopping list.
Furthermore, here are the facts for this generous skein of Mainstays Cozy Chenille Yarn:
- Super-Bulky (6)
- 10.5 oz (300 g)
- 220 yds (201 m)
- Machine wash cold, dry flat, do not bleach, do not iron.

There is another yarn (also available at Walmart, other craft stores, and online) that you can compare, which is slightly more expensive – Bernat Blanket Yarn. We compared swatches from both yarns, and Bernat yarn is softer and drapes better. But the Smoke Green color by Mainstays fits better into our Hygge color scheme than similar green yarn (in ‘Smoky Green’) by Bernat.
So, if you don’t mind spending a few more dollars and prefer a softer yarn, here are the links for the substitutes by Bernat:
- Bernat Blanket Yarn in Smoky Green – 3 skeins
- Bernat Blanket Yarn in Vintage White – 2 skeins
Notably, we used a metal Crochet Hook 10 mm, although the label recommends a smaller 8 mm crochet hook. The stitch needs room to breathe to achieve the same textured effect.
Abbreviations
- CH – chain
- SLST – slip stitch
- HDC – half double crochet
- BL – back loop
As illustrated, you will be using only basic stitches for this chunky blanket. So, if you are a beginner, do not fear – you’ll be able to make this lively Hygge blanket, start to finish.
Pattern
With Smoke Green Yarn, CH 80+1. It can be any even number of stitches plus 1.
Row 1: *HDC into second CH from the hook. SL ST into the next CH*. Repeat between * * to the end of the row, ending with the SL ST. CH1, turn.
Row 2: Into the first ST, *HDC into BL (make half double crochet stitch into the back loop of the first stitch). SLST into BL (make slip stitch into the back loop of the next stitch).* Repeat between * * to the end of the row, ending with the SL ST. CH1, turn.
Rows 3-23: repeat Row 2. At the end of row 23, pull through with next color (Ivory), CH1, turn.
Row 24-47: repeat Row 2 in Ivory. At the end of the last row, change color to Smoke Green, CH1, turn.
Continue alternating colors until you’ve used all the yarn. As a result, you’ll have 5 color blocks in your Hygge Chunky Blanket. Notably, each color block is approximately 12″ x 40″ in size.
Of course, cut off extra yarn and hide all tail ends. It is very easy when you are dealing with chunky yarn.

Finished Size
Your Hygge crochet blanket/throw will be approximately 40″ x 60″ in size.
