Yarn for “Ruffles” Crochet Scarf

Imagine soft and luxurious yarn flowing through your fingers as you create intricate stitches and patterns. That is the joy of crocheting with natural fibers. These fibers not only feel amazing in your hands, but they also have a variety of benefits that synthetic fibers can’t match.

Cotton, a popular choice among crafters, is a durable, breathable fiber that is perfect for spring and summer patterns. Most importantly, you can use it for special items that require natural yarn, like baby blankets, cardigans, or light shawls.

Bamboo, on the other hand, has recently gained popularity in the crochet community for its silky texture and natural sheen. This eco-friendly fiber is not only soft and lightweight but also has natural antibacterial properties.

Crochet Scarf Pattern

The good news for beginners: you can chain any number for this pattern, odd or even. In our example, for the foundation chain, CH21 +1.

Row 1-7

SC into the second CH from the hook and in every CH of the foundation row (21 SC). CH1, turn.

Now all the fun begins – we’ll start the row of ruffles. Another piece of good news for beginners: the ruffles row doesn’t require any counting, graphs, etc. On the contrary, you’ll be randomly alternating 2DC and 3DC stitches made into the back loops of the previous row of single crochet.

Row 8

SC into BL of the first ST, HDC & DC into the next ST, 3DC into the next ST, 2DC into the next ST, continue alternating 2DC & 3DC into BL until there are 2 stitches left, HDC & DC into the next ST, SC into the last ST. CH1, turn.

Row 9

For this row, we’ll crochet into the same row but into the remaining loops. For this purpose, turn your crochet so that the ruffles are on the bottom and start making SC stitches into the remaining loops: 21 SC into BL only. CH 1, turn.

'Ruffles' Crochet Scarf

Row 10-15

SC into the second CH from the hook and in every CH of the foundation row (21 SC). CH1, turn.

As illustrated, for these rows, it’s just smooth sailing: SC until you have seven rows of single crochet stitches between each ruffle row.

Continue alternating rows 8-9 and 10-15 until you use almost all yarn. For infinity scarf, sew the ends together, weave in the ends.

Troubleshooting

Notably, it’s an easy pattern and allows some randomness and creativity. The ruffled rows are fun, and you can experiment with adding more or fewer double crochet stitches and see how it affects the look of the ruffles.

While you are still learning the stitch, we would recommend using stitch markers. Adding a stitch marker to the first and last stitch of your ruffle row can provide some much-needed assistance as you perfect this technique.

Most importantly, the easy single crochet rows let you just crochet and relax while you are listening to an audiobook, podcast, or even watching a show.
